Stammering
Stammering
Catherine’s approach to working with adults who stammer is grounded in respect, collaboration, and evidence-based practice. She recognises stammering as a natural and valid way of speaking. Work is not about ‘fixing’ or eliminating stammering. Instead, Catherine supports clients to communicate more freely, confidently, and authentically in the ways that matter most to them.
Drawing on the City Lit approach to stammering therapy, sessions focus on understanding everyone’s experiences, patterns, and goals. Therapy may include:
Exploring how stammering shows up in different speaking situations
Reducing physical and emotional struggle associated with speaking
Developing greater openness and ease with stammering
Building confidence in social, professional, and everyday communication
Addressing avoidance behaviours and expanding participation in valued activities.
She integrates practical strategies with reflective work, helping clients make informed choices about their communication. This may involve experimenting with speech techniques where helpful, alongside developing self-acceptance and resilience.
Therapy is collaborative and client-led. Whether your goal is to feel more at ease speaking at work, participate more fully in conversations, or change your relationship with your stammer, Catherine can tailor support to your priorities.
